The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union KMPDU has today announced that the strike for medical practitioners is still on untill their demands are fulfilled by the government and the ministry oh health.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (R.F.U.E.A) grounds, KMPDU Secretary general Dr Davji Atellah confirmed the strike to remain ongoing as a result a failed consensus with the government and the ministry of health.
Dr. Atellah affirmed that the nationwide strike has today marked the 20th day and that it will go on untill their concerns are resolved.
In his remarks, Dr. Atellah stated, “today marks the 20th day of our nation wide strike, which I will say is maybe 20% of the time it took us to get the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Ideally we are ready to go for the 80% of the time, we may go up to 100 days, 200 days or up to eternity untill these issues are resolved.”
According to Dr. Atellah, The CBA signed by governors from the 47 counties of Kenya has not been implemented as he singled out instances that showed actions that are contrary to the CBA.
“We have seen the ministry of health deciding to reduce the salary of interns by 91%. This is after contravening the agreement that they need to post these doctors after every 30 days once they oath from the councils and the boards.” Said Dr. Atellah.
The council of governors was also noted to have failed and have gone in contrary with the CBA they signed in an agreement with KMPDU.
“County governors have come out saying they are as clean as cotton and saying that it's the responsibility of doctors that patients are dying in the hospitals, but we keep asking them, did they not sign the CBA that was not implemented?” questioned the Secretary General.
The union has emphasized on the demands that the government and the ministry of health should resolve which include: posting of the medical interns as per the CBA, implementation of the CBA whereby all the 7-years basic salary areas are to be cleared, payment of the fees for the postgraduate doctors, promotion of medical doctors in the counties and employment of doctors due to shortage of the expertise.
The ministries of health and labour and county governments have been reported to have no plan of resolving the matters, hence the union has called upon the president of Kenya to intervene in order to solve the matters.
The union has vowed not to resume work due to intimidations and threats but will only go back to work when given a clear plan that the issues are being resolved.
