NCCK CALLS UPON THE GOVERNMENT TO RESOLVE THE NATION'S STATE FOR DIGNIFIED LIVELIHOODS

BY VICTORIA MOVINE

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has today concluded the 14th Nairobi Regional Conference that was held at Jumuia Conference and country home, Limuru to transact statutory business and consider the state of the nation and counties.

Considering the council's theme —dignified livelihoods, resilient communities, the council has sent a message to the nation and the council's region which covers Nairobi, Kiambu, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties.

The council singled out areas of concerns that need the national and county government's attention.

According to Rev. Dr. Alphonse Kanga, Regional Chairman, NCCK Nairobi region, the council has noted that Kenyan citizens have been affected by systematic impoverishment through political and social governance structures.

NCCK officials during the briefing on the state of the nation on Wednesday, 3rd April 2024 at Jumuia Conference and Country home, Limuru.

During the conference, the council called upon the national and county governments to first stop impoverishing citizens but rather put in place measures to address the drivers of poverty to make promote better living for the nation.

The council also has recommended measures that will help to address poverty which include: the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) to change strategy on how to handle corruption by those accumulating money and properties meant to help Kenyans for themselves.

Dr. Kanga also urged the county governors to clean their governments by removing cartels and other corruption channels in the counties.

He also added that the church will help to create awareness of integrity and values. “On our part, we commit to take the period between now and the next elections to educate our people on integrity and values, and will integrate the same in our churches.” He said.

Secondly, to promote dignified livelihoods, NCCK has recommended the county governments to provide favourable business environments by consolidating and rationalizing all the fees, levies and licenses required, national and county governments to reduce taxation levels, development partners to support skills by training entrepreneurship for citizens and also called upon the government to punish all those involved in fake fertilizer scandal.

Thirdly, NCCK has called upon the national government to resolve health care workers crisis. “We call upon the national government to complete the devolution of health services to the county governments and urge the county governments to put the welfare of the people first.” Said Rev. Kanga.

Lastly, NCCK has challenged the parliament especially the justice and legal affairs Committee to facilitate a comprehensive nationwide civic sensitization on the report presented to parliament by National Dialogue Committee to involve Kenyans in decisions that will affect their lives.
