Nairobi, Kenya – November 21, 2024 – The Africa Smart Cities Investment Summit (ASCIS) 2024, held in Nairobi, Kenya, brought together a diverse group of delegates from across the continent to explore the future of urban development powered by cutting-edge technologies. The summit, which focused on "Unleashing the AI City," was a significant platform for thought leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and academics to discuss the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other smart technologies in shaping the future of African cities.

The event opened with a welcoming address by Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Chief Curator of ASCIS, who underscored the importance of fostering innovation in Africa’s urban spaces. He emphasized that smart cities are not just about technological advancement but about building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban environments that meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Among the key figures present was Prof. Emmanuel Mutisya, Head of the Global Education Body at the African Development Bank and a long-term consultant in the education and skills development sector. Prof. Mutisya delivered a compelling speech on how AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart technologies could transform cities into hubs of sustainable development. He noted that cities must be developed with a deep focus on environmental sustainability, highlighting the need for industries that are not only innovative but also green and climate-friendly.

"Cities are currently the highest emitters of greenhouse gases, and they are at the forefront of the climate change challenges we face today. It’s critical that we commercialize innovations that reduce our carbon footprint and create opportunities for our people," Prof. Mutisya stated.

The summit featured a series of high-level speeches and discussions, with John Paul Okwiri, CEO of Konza Technopolis, offering insights into Kenya’s efforts to build a world-class smart city. As a key player in the Konza Technopolis project, Okwiri emphasized the importance of creating a tech-driven urban ecosystem that fosters economic growth while prioritizing sustainability.

Michal Mlynár, Deputy Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, delivered special remarks, stressing the role of international cooperation in building sustainable urban futures. He noted that Africa’s urbanization trend, if properly managed, could lead to enormous opportunities for economic growth and social development.

In a special address, Hon. John Tanui, Kenya's Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of ICT, pointed out that the Kenyan government is committed to fostering an environment where technology and innovation can thrive. He also reiterated the importance of policy frameworks and regulatory reforms that support smart city initiatives and ensure inclusivity and sustainability.

A significant portion of the discussions revolved around the intersection of smart city development and climate change mitigation. Prof. Mutisya highlighted that as Africa’s urban population grows, it is crucial to ensure that new industries, especially those in cities, are environmentally responsible. "The future of African cities must involve green industries that do not contribute to the worsening climate crisis," he emphasized.

At the same time, the summit placed a strong emphasis on the role of youth in the development of smart cities. With Africa’s young population set to drive the next phase of technological innovation, the summit called for strategies to integrate their voices and ideas into the smart city vision. The panelists discussed how smart cities can offer opportunities for job creation, economic empowerment, and digital literacy for Africa’s youth.

The summit also explored the critical role of education and research in the development of smart cities. Prof. Mutisya urged universities and research institutions to partner with governments in producing policy frameworks that will drive smart city agendas. "Academia plays a crucial role in training the next generation of leaders who will design, implement, and manage these cities," he stated.

In his remarks, Prof. Mutisya emphasized the need for the government to create a regulatory environment that supports technological innovation while addressing the challenges of climate change and youth unemployment. He called for universities to be involved in producing policy briefs and training leaders who can incorporate smart city initiatives into national development plans.

A Unified Vision for Africa’s Future

The summit concluded with a call for greater collaboration across sectors—public, private, and academic—to realize the vision of AI-driven smart cities in Africa. "The growth of smart cities will require the concerted effort of all stakeholders. We must come together to ensure that these cities are inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial for all Africans," said Prof. Mutisya.

With discussions on technology, sustainability, and the future of urban life, the Africa Smart Cities Investment Summit 2024 highlighted the immense potential of AI and other technologies to reshape Africa’s urban landscapes. As the continent continues to urbanize at an unprecedented rate, the smart cities agenda offers a promising path forward—one that balances innovation with environmental stewardship and social equity. The summit demonstrated that the smart cities of tomorrow are within reach, and Africa’s future as a hub of technological innovation and sustainable development is closer than ever.
