PS health Mary Muthoni, Abdhulahi Ali KEMRI chairman and other delegates present at the launch on 11th February 2025.The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has today launched its Strategic Plan 2023-2027, setting a bold direction for research and innovation to enhance healthcare outcomes in Kenya and beyond.
The launch that was presided by PS health, Mary Muthoni, was unveiled during the KEMRI Anual Scientific and Health Conference (KASH) gathering healthcare experts from around the world to discuss the future of medical advancements and explore innovative approaches to enhance patient care and treatment.
Considering the conference's theme, Research Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Health Systems; A Community-driven Agenda, a key focus of the event was the potential of precision medicine in disease management. This personalized approach tailors medical treatments based on a patient’s genetic makeup, offering more targeted and effective care. The conference explored how genetics can be used to determine whether patients have genetic resistance to certain medications, improving treatment effectiveness.
Medical professionals at the event highlighted the need for precision medicine in Africa, drawing inspiration from its success in Western countries. Advocates argued that precision medicine not only enhances patient outcomes but also proves cost-effective by ensuring treatments are customized to individual genetic profiles. The approach has already demonstrated significant success in treating complex conditions like cancer, where it aids in diagnosis and identifies the most suitable therapies.
Dr. Abdhulahi Ali, KEMRI Chairman of the Board of Directors, officially launched the KEMRI Strategic Plan 2023-2027, emphasizing its role in advancing research excellence and supporting Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals.
"This plan lays a firm foundation for the development of research products that will contribute to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)," he said.
Dr. Cecilia Mbae, Chair of the KASH Organizing Committee, highlighted the importance of research, innovation, and community-driven approaches in building sustainable healthcare systems.
"Today, we begin with the Pre-Conference Day, focused on the theme, 'Unveiling Kenya’s Precision Medicine: Strengthening Disease Management through Targeted Therapy.' This marks a significant step toward improving healthcare through research-driven innovation," she stated.
The conference also stressed the importance of educating healthcare providers on integrating genetics into clinical practices. Experts called on African nations to adopt precision medicine, with the goal of improving healthcare while reducing treatment costs over time.
The conference’s central aim was to encourage the adoption of innovative medical practices, pushing for greater incorporation of genetic testing into healthcare systems across Africa. This integration would help healthcare professionals understand genetic predispositions, ensuring that patients receive treatments tailored to their unique needs.
As the potential of precision medicine continues to unfold, the conference served as a crucial platform for discussing how these advancements can be leveraged to improve healthcare outcomes across Africa.
