The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) will assist authorities in identifying victims of the recent helicopter crash by conducting DNA testing on remains recovered from the crash site.
In a statement, KEMRI said its advanced molecular biology and forensic laboratories will collect DNA samples from close relatives of the deceased to support the identification process. The samples will be compared with genetic material recovered from the crash scene to confirm the identities of the victims.
According to the institute, the DNA profiling will be carried out by trained scientists and forensic experts using internationally recognized standards to ensure accurate results.
KEMRI said the process is aimed at helping families receive confirmation about their loved ones while also supporting authorities in completing the necessary legal procedures following the tragedy.
“This effort underscores KEMRI’s commitment to providing scientific solutions during public health emergencies and disaster response,” the institute said.
Acting Director General Prof. Elijah Songok expressed condolences to families affected by the crash and assured them that the institute’s teams are handling the process with professionalism and care.
“As a national research institution, KEMRI recognizes the weight of this moment. We extend our sincere condolences to the families affected and assure them that our teams are working with precision, professionalism and respect to ensure accurate DNA identification,” said Prof. Songok.
He added that the institute remains committed to supporting both the bereaved families and the relevant authorities during the difficult period.
